I really don’t know what the legal deal is – but I can sure tell you that having a wedding performed by someone who just got the paper can be a recipe for disaster. My sister had a friend who just got an online license do her wedding and it was a train wreck. He obviously had no public speaking training and lost his place numerous times throughout the ceremony. She was totally embarrassed (and it was embarrassing for me and my family). It was a really bad way to start off the wedding celebration. The ceremony was a topic of discussion at a lot of tables at the reception. Believe me, having a friend do your wedding may seem like fun, but actually end up being a fiasco.

We did a sand ceremony because we got married outdoors and didn’t think unity candle would work in the wind.

I know how you feel Kristen! We had issues with the conflicting desires BOTH moms. I finally had to sit down with them and (gently) remind them that this is “our” wedding. Good luck!!

My cousin did the dismissing thing. The church air conditioner was a bit marginal and I thought we were going to die before we got to leave!

We used a canvas and painted a heart on it. He painted the right half while I painted the left. Then our guests signed it with a sharpie at the reception. We framed it and hung it in our apartment.

We blended two colors of wine and then shared it in the glass we had printed with our names and wedding date! It tasted wierd but it was different.

We got married at the gazebo by the Birdhaven Greenhouse in Pilcher Park. If you are anywhere near this Joliet park and want an outdoor wedding, you should check it out.

Speaking of getting the flame started: I was at a wedding in this restored historical church in Joliet. There was a good sized wedding party (7-8 on each side) and lots of guests. When the minister was saying a prayer, I looked up (ok I peeked) and saw the tulle that was wrapped around one of the candelabras was on fire! One of the groomsmen grabbed the candelabra and carried it out of the church. It looked like a huge Olympic torch going down the aisle.
